01 What is an SSIC Code?
SSIC stands for Singapore Standard Industrial Classification.
It is a standardised code system developed by SingStat (Singapore Department of Statistics) to classify business activities in Singapore.
Each SSIC code corresponds to a specific trade or activity. Examples include:
-
62011
– Software development services -
46900
– General wholesale trade -
70201
– Business and management consultancy services
SSIC codes are mandatory when registering a company, opening a bank account, or applying for certain licences in Singapore.
02 Why is the SSIC Code Important?
Required for Company Registration
The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) requires each company to submit one or two SSIC codes that describe its primary business activities.
Impacts Compliance and Licensing
-
Certain industries (e.g. education, healthcare, food services) require licences based on the SSIC code
-
Banks refer to your SSIC code to assess industry risk during account opening
-
Government grants and support schemes may also use SSIC classifications as part of eligibility checks
Used for National Statistics & Policy
The SSIC system helps the government with data collection, economic analysis, and industry planning.
03 How to Choose the Right SSIC Code?
- Identify your core business activity: Focus on your main source of revenue or services
- Refer to the official directory: Browse ACRA or SingStat websites
- Choose the most relevant code: You may enter up to two codes, but the first one must reflect your core business
- Seek professional advice if unsure: Corporate secretaries or consultants can help ensure accuracy
04 Common Mistakes to Avoid
🚫 “Just pick a random code that seems close”
→ May cause bank rejection, licence delays, or require changes later
🚫 “I’m registering a holding company, so I’ll just use a ‘holding’ code”
→ If you’re actively managing, investing, or operating, choose a code that reflects those functions
🚫 “Choosing more codes means I can do more things”
→ ACRA defines your business based on the first SSIC code only; additional codes don’t expand your legal scope
